My kinda sad but also inspiring conversation with the great Dr. Cleavon Gilman.

I’m an awkward radio interviewer.

As part of the COVID-19 Data Hero Awards program, I interviewed nearly 50 people from a range of disciplines and expertise.

I was still “finding my groove” along the way with each interviewee, truly astonished by the amount of work each had done.

Some were looking toward a future “after COVID” and others plan exits out of public health entirely, but most were excited to talk about their work. The thing they all seemed to have in common was that they were exhausted.

And rehashing some of the harassment many faced simply for reporting data weighed on me.

When I was blessed with the opportunity to interview Dr. Cleavon Gliman - after months of communication and support for each other online - I was a little star-struck.

Dr. Cleavon made the news last December when he was fired from the hospital he worked at (as an ER doctor) for tweeting about how the state of Arizona had no more ICU beds available.
