Urgent: Stop Drastic Cuts to Science Funding
We Can Protect the Nation’s Investment in Science
If the Trump regime’s proposed 2027 budget is passed, it will undermine science as we know it in the U.S.
With cuts of nearly 70% in some areas, the current administration seems determined to destroy our nation’s overall leadership in the sciences, with disproportionate reductions for geography, climate, and spatial science.
Here’s what Congress will be considering:
37% slashed from the U.S. Geological Survey’s budget.
47% cut from NASA Science.
67% cut from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.
55% cut from the National Science Foundation, including a complete shutdown of the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences, which supports virtually all geography programming at the NSF.
If some of these numbers seem familiar, it’s because they are: The President proposed slashing NSF’s budget by precisely this much last year. Much of this proposal was defeated, thanks to people like you who spoke up.
This year, we are already seeing compliance in advance, with much to lose even before the battle has begun. Leaders at NSF have already signaled their intent to close SBE even without the budget being approved.
“At an internal all-hands meeting on Friday, NSF leaders announced that they would dissolve the agency’s Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences directorate based on the budget request, according to two NSF staff members who shared information anonymously in order to speak freely.” Nature, April 3
It’s time to speak up again. Though the fight could last all summer, the earlier we address the stakes for science, the better.
