An objective assessment proves that, despite an undefeated season and ACC championship, Florida State is not one of the four best/most deserving teams to be included in the college football playoff. The committee should be commended for what appears to be using unbiased metrics rather than emotion, tradition, and the inevitable public outcry.
1. Consensus Team Rankings
Based on a consensus of 65 rating systems curated by Kenneth Massey (as of 12/4/23 at 12:30 PM), FSU had an average rank of not one, not two, not three, not four, not even five - but six among the top-ranked teams this season.
This collection includes human polls (such as the AP and Coaches Poll), as well as mathematical models, both predictive (who is the best right now) and retrospective (who had the best season). This composite is most likely the closest thing to the "best" method of ranking teams as it minimizes subjectivity and has diverse rating criteria among the ensemble members.
