I totally agree with Allen and Carolyn, Rebekah. A beautifully crafted column. I remember reading of how the Nazis began paving the way for the Holocaust. First, they banned Jews from zoos and public parks, then restuarants, and then civil service. No one objected, and then it was detention, concentration camps... As you say, it's not about the pajamas.
Please, keep on writing, Ms Jones. I find your essays to be articulate, timely, and to the point. They serve an important function to all of us. I was born in Poland, in 1937, and have been through WWII, winding up in a Garman labor camp toward the end of the war--where we were liberated by the US army. I was 8 years old by then. We emigrated to the US from Germany in 1947. For obvious reasons, I have been interested in the history and events in Germany that lead up to the War, particularly the period from 1933 on. I find many disturbing parallels, a frightening deja-vu of event and of processea that are so very similar to what you describe in your essay "Incremental Surrender."
