  • Virginia Company lands in modern-day Jamestown (1607)

  • Robert E. Lee resigns from the US army to create the Confederate Army (1861)

  • The American Civil War beings at Fort Sumter (1861)

  • Lincoln is shot (1865)

  • The Sultana explosion kills nearly 2,000 union soldiers returning home after being prisoners of war (1865)

  • Vladimir Lenin is born (1870)

  • Adolf Hitler is born (1889)

  • San Francisco Earthquake (1906)
