As President Biden looks toward his final months in office, he has an opportunity to pardon an American whistleblower and hero, Reality Winner.
Winner was convicted and sentenced six years ago under the Espionage Act of 1917. She was given the longest prison sentence in American history under that statute – 63 months.
Winner has served her time and is nearing the end of her probationary period.
Winner’s ability to move forward as a convicted felon has been unjustly hindered. I started getting to know Winner — an extremely intelligent young woman — earlier this year.
She served her country in the military. She could and should be able to use her knowledge and intelligence to get a college degree, participate in our democracy, and contribute to creating a better America.
As a fellow whistleblower, I can sympathize with what she did while recognizing the illegality.
