Whistleblower awards, Dan Ellsberg, and a much-needed documentary
When my friend and mentor Dan Ellsberg emailed me earlier this year with news of his diagnosis and his decision not to prolong his life, I was so distraught that it took me two weeks to respond.
When he passed away in June, I tried to run from the grief as I prepared to run from Florida.
I couldn’t talk about Dan without crying.
The idea that I couldn’t call him, email him, or reach out for his advice, his congratulations, his wisdom feels like a hole not only in my life, but in the universe.
At a memorial honoring Dan’s legacy in Washington D.C. Sunday, rounding out five days of events honoring heroic whistleblowers from across the world, we paused for an awards ceremony for the organization’s prestigious Pillar Awards, which honor notable civil and human rights champions and the whistleblowers who exemplify courage in the face of power.
