January Comeuppance: A positive start to 2024
We began 2024 with one of the worst surges in COVID-19 infections since the start of the pandemic.
Wars and alleged genocide, Trump polling disturbingly close to President Biden, record temperatures – the overwhelming sense of doom and gloom drug us all into the new year kicking and screaming, fearful of what fresh hell 2024 might bring.
Not all was lost in the first month of the new year, though, and January brought very much needed justice to break through the onslaught of darkness.
E. Jean Carrol wins $83 million in second defamation suit against Trump.
Donald Trump sexually assaulted E. Jean Carroll in a changing room nearly three decades ago. Carroll came forward about her trauma in 2019, and Trump lied about the assault and proceeded to defame her from the presidential bully pulpit for years. In May 2023, a New York jury found Trump liable for both the sexual abuse and defamation, awarding Carroll $5 million in damages.
Trump raged on.
That rage and continued lashing out about Trump’s assault on Carroll will cost him $83 million more, a jury decided late last week. Carroll, a feminist heroine showing the world that the most powerful men in the world can still be held accountable, has done something no one else has managed to do before: Get Trump to shut up. Since the second verdict, Trump has not uttered a single word about Carroll. While Trump will undoubtedly appeal, six days of silence about such a resounding defeat is certainly a first.
