Florida State Shooting

Five people are hospitalized and one person is dead after a gunman open fired on the campus of Florida State University today around noon.

Today, I made my second trip back to Florida since moving away in 2023. I arrived less than an hour before the shooting started.

I'm here to give the keynote at an academic conference at a college on the other side of the state.

My heart is with all of the FSU community.

The news said that the Bellamy and HCB buildings at FSU are "active crime scenes" on campus.

Bellamy was my building. My office was on the third floor. Room 319.

I taught in HCB more than once.

Worse still, there are kids who went through the Parkland shooting while they were in high school who are now students at FSU and I can't even imagine what that feels like for them.

This is the second shooting for FSU since 2014.

I've heard from most of friends on campus, but there is at least one family whose entirely world ended today.

And one is one too many.
