Just after midnight on May 1, a violent pro-Israel mob attacked UCLA students while they slept on campus, shouting “second Nakba” as they beat students and threw fireworks into the protest group, according to the LA Times and video posted online. Police did not intervene for two hours.
Later that day, Republicans’ along with Florida Democrat Jared Moskowitz, put forward a bill to redefine antisemitism to include any criticism of Israel or Judaism as a hate crime. HR 6090 passed the United States House 320-91. Free speech advocates and organizations, including the ACLU, quickly condemned HR 6090, but both the Senate and the President have shown support for its final passage.
On Thursday, May 2, a UCLA student was hospitalized after being shot by LAPD at point-blank range with rubber bullets during a police raid of the student group. LAPD then lied about “no serious injuries” resulting from their assault on UCLA students.
Hours after the raid, with the nation looking for leadership as college students were being attacked, often violently and with police brutality, President Biden finally spoke.
And may have damaged his re-election campaign beyond repair with a single line: “Dissent should never lead to disorder.”
