Governments and communities began exploring the viability of legal remedies for holding polluters accountable in the 1990s.
The complexities involved with financial attribution of global warming, met with highly-coordinated disinformation campaigns funded by fossil fuel companies, prevented meaningful development on this front for decades.
Since 2017, however, more than 100 lawsuits have been filed each year to hold those companies accountable for the damage they’ve done to the planet.
