Mardi Gras predates American celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and, yes, Independence Day. The French brought Mardi Gras to Louisiana, where it has been celebrated uninterrupted for more than 325 years.
More than an historic relic, though, Mardi Gras is personal for those of us who grew up along the stretch of Gulf Coast from Galveston to Gulf Shores. Even more so for the French-speaking communities still there.
