2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Projections
Every April, Colorado State University produces its pre-season estimates for what to expect for the coming hurricane season. They’ve gotten pretty good at it. This year, CSU projects the most active season since the program began in 1955.
High sea surface temperatures and the end of El Nino, which creates wind shear that counteracts hurricane formation, are the two biggest culprits for this season’s outlook.
“Given the combined hurricane-favorable signals of an extremely warm Atlantic and a likely developing La Niña, the forecast team has higher-than-normal confidence for an April outlook that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season will be very active. This is the highest prediction for hurricanes that CSU has ever issued with their April outlook,” said the report.
